Is Cosmetic Surgery Tourism Worth It?

Medical tourism has been on the rise recently, and cosmetic surgery is the most in demand service. A lot of tourists are opting to combine their cosmetic procedures with their exotic vacations. The top ten destinations include Brazil, Costa Rica, Hungary, India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Mexico, Thailand and Turkey. But questions are arising whether if it is a worthy decision because as much as it is giving patients a “hitting-two-birds-in-one-stone” deal; it also has a number of risks involved.

THE PERKS OF COSMETIC SURGERY ABROAD

One of the major reasons that draw a lot of patients to opt for cosmetic surgery vacations is because of the price. Compared to the staggering costs in the US, Europe or Australia, they see a lot of good reviews in other countries who give it a much budget friendly price. With the hard economy we have today, it comes as no surprise that these people would choose a more affordable alternative abroad than to shell out thousands back home.

Another reason why cosmetic surgery tourism is also gaining more popularity is because it allows patients to get the surgery that they want, while at the same time recuperating on vacation. Those who have busy schedules find this to be a very practical solution. And these destinations also respond to the demand by offering deals on hotels, airline tickets and other vacation packages. Some high-end hotels like the Ritz or Hyatt are offering recovery treats for tourists who are in the area recovering from cosmetic surgeries they got there.

In some cases there is even such a service as double surgery, where a couple or two friends could have a certain procedure done together while on vacation. These trips usually last five to six days, with the procedures done on an outpatient basis probably with a one to two day stay at the hospital.

THE DRAWBACKS OF MEDICAL TOURISM

Most cosmetic surgeries done outside the patient’s country of origin are uncovered by insurance companies. There is also the risk of having it done by surgeons who are not equipped with the best materials or expertise, resulting to haphazard results. What makes matters worse is that these could be difficult for you to file legal suits later on.

Organization or certification standards may also be different abroad, which is why you may never really guarantee the level of work that you will receive. Adding to this, should any complication result, it will be harder and more expensive to have it repaired later on.

Combining your vacation with surgery may not be really the best for your health. You can’t really enjoy a full vacation and other activities without risking any damage to any new procedure you have done. So you have to remember that if there is any vacation on the schedule, it will be more likely catered to your recovery.

HOW TO MINIMIZE THE RISKS OF GETTING COSMETIC SURGERY ABROAD?

Before you plan on getting your cosmetic surgery abroad, do your research first. Know all the surgeons in the area, their credentials and their quality of work based on the accounts of previous patients. Check out their company website and look at forums.

Never go for second best in cosmetic service, even if the vacation part of the deal is downright impressive.
