The Dangers of Medical Spas

Spa services are becoming so common today with a number of these establishments opening almost everywhere. That is why they have come full circle from just your typical services that will provide you with some R & R, to medical aesthetic procedures; hence it is dubbed today as Medical Spas or Medi Spas.  However, despite its popularity, there are accompanying dangers that have come to light due to recent reports.  So are medi spas really advisable?

Just recently a medi spa in Maryland was shut down after complaints of infections after getting liposuction treatments. This resulted to one death and two hospitalized after contracting a bacterial infection at the said spa.

These events led authorities and so many clients questioning if whether these medi spas should be giving these kinds of services.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MEDI SPA AND A DAY SPA?

A lot of people may confuse medical spas with a day spa. As much as both establishments provide relaxing treatments, the difference is that the former offers more advanced treatments. Medi spas operate primarily under the supervision of a board-certified and qualified doctor, or health care specialist.

Regular day spas have their team of cosmetologists who may be very good and even certified for the services that they provide, but this doesn’t always guarantee that they are qualified to perform these medical aesthetic procedures.

Services like these would require the more advanced knowledge of a doctor, a nurse, or an aesthetician who is specifically trained to perform the procedure along with their extensive knowledge on human anatomy.
Medical spas have employed a more clinical approach compared to day spas. But just like the latter, they also offer massages and facials.

THE PROBLEM

What is alarming is that there are day spas that already offer medical aesthetic procedures, such as Injectable fillers, Laser skin rejuvenation treatments, photofacials, microdermabrasion and even liposuction, even if they are not really duly qualified to do so.

It may bring in serious cash, but this practice and false advertising places the clients at risk. With them remaining unaware of the repercussions of trusting these establishments, they could lead themselves to permanently disfiguring their bodies, or worse, it just might cause them their fatal end.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF?

When you want to keep yourself protected from those underhanded advertising tricking you into some of these spas, you need to learn these tips.

RESEARCH ABOUT WHO OWNS OR OPERATES THE SPA.

The reason why you have to ensure this is because there are some establishments that claim to be medical spas, even though they are not really accredited. There are some states that are strict regarding these issues, while there are those that are not. A medical spa should be supervised by a doctor.

WHAT PROCEDURES ARE OFFERED IN THIS PARTICULAR MEDICAL SPA?

You also have to check whether there are extensive procedures and are these even safe. It is also very important that you know how these procedures are going to be carried out. Are their techniques following strict aseptic techniques to prevent any chances of infection? Or what extra measures do they take to make sure that the personnel, the surroundings and the area remain clean.

• WHO PERFORMS THE PROCEDURES, AND ARE THEY DULY TRAINED AND CERTIFIED?

Again the person who performs the procedure should have the proof that he or she is extensively trained and certified to perform the procedure. A simple Botox could end up with botched results with untrained and inexperienced hands. So make sure that you entrust your body and your face to those who are licensed to do it.

WHAT ARE THE EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS ARE THEY USING? ARE THESE SAFE?

It is also an important part of your preparation process if you ask the about the kind of materials and equipment’s they are using. It would be a bonus if they have the latest machines to ensure you a more advanced treatment and improved results. You should also make sure that these are safe and that they are well maintained and kept clean. These can be a perfect source of infection.

• ARE THE SURROUNDING CLEAN?

Another factor that could affect your risks to infections is the surroundings. When you choose a spa, make sure that the environment is clean. Also ask about how they clean the area, and how often they do it. This is not too much considering the effect that resulted from that disgraced medical spa in Maryland.
